Urbanization in India has been marked by a significant population shift from rural to urban areas, driven by opportunities for better living conditions and economic opportunities.

As per the provisions of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023, there are 3 (three) types of urban local bodies in Nagaland viz Municipal Council, Town Council and Urban Station Committee.

Urban Local Bodies in the State are witnessing a paradigm shift towards democratic consolidation following the successful conduct of municipal election after two decades.

The Department of Municipal Affairs, as the nodal authority for policy formulation, regulation, and monitoring of the of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), plays a pivotal role in strengthening urban governance in the State as well as facilitating infrastructure development in ULBs.
